|

I took a look at Lorianne's libertarian site, and I found its array of topics to be well thought out. The entire menu is on the first page and easy to scan.
I didn't think it would fit LandV perfectly, but with a bit of tweaking could work well for us.
I'm going to post my suggested menu here when I get it polished a bit.
Perhaps someone else has some suggestions?... |

How about it broken into sections entitled "hateful screeds," "verbal masurbation" and "autopilot bickering" so we can find what we're looking for more quickly?
Just kidding.

Would something like this work?
Introductions & Announcements
A place to introduce yourself, and for us to tell you what's happening.
News Zone - U.S. (or perhaps Current Events - U.S. )
Domestic politics, elections, catastrophes, heroic or dastardly deeds.
News Zone - World (or perhaps Current Events - World)
Happenings in the rest of the world.
Weird and Obscure News
Happenings on the wild side.
Olio Folio (or perhaps Miscellany)
A mixed bag--go here if nothing else fits.
Science & Technology
The cosmos, cyberspace, computers, discoveries, inventions, gadgets.
Arts & Entertainment
Books, movies, TV, theatre, music, art.
Food & Drink
Cooking, recipes, gardening--things epicurean or gastronomical.
Travel
Where did you go? What did you do?
Fun and Games
Jokes, cartoons, games, puzzles, conundrums.
On the Personal Side
Personal relationships, advice, mistakes, regrets...
Sports Talk
Team and individual sports, competitions, personalities.
I was kind of taken by that "Weird and Obscure News" title on another forum, but maybe it wouldn't have much utility for us. There are always other places to tuck such things.
I felt "History" could easily fit into other categories, depending on the subject of the history posting, so I didn't include it.

Well, I edited the list in the meantime--I had left out "Travel," plus I changed "Current Events" to "News Zone." (But I don't know--maybe "Current Events" is more meaningful to more people.
I also took out this one:
Dollars
The economy, business, personal finance.
The more I thought about it, the more unnecessary the "Dollars" category seemed.
(Am I anal-retentive, or what??)

| Thank you, Meta. As soon as I will be able to do it, I follow what you have written. Although I am surprised that you took out Economics (dollar), as the lot of followed and discussed topics is related to these events. |

As for Dollars, I felt that most of our discussions about the economy tended to be political discussions based on some current happening; such discussions would ordinarily take place under News Zone - U.S.. I don't remember seeing any discussions about personal finances or investments (though I could have missed them).
So, that's why I took "Dollars" out of my initial list after I had posted it. |

Very funny, Alan. But actually, in looking around at other sites, I found some with forums dedicated to junk postings. There a person may "flame" without being censored, and there, also, the administrator may insert items he has deleted from the other forums. The Drudge Forum calls it "Spam | Flame | Junk Bin." Another describes its forum "The Trash Can" as "where the political trash talkers end up." |

Further comments on menus...
Overall, I like to see the most popular forum names at the top--alphabetical listings of forum names have no utility for me because--if I'm new--I don't know what you're calling the forum I'm interested in.
I question whether we would make much use of the following topics:
Philosophy & Religion - Aside from commentary arising from events in the news, I don't see many of us starting threads dealing with these basic subjects. One would think we might, but we don't seem to. The few times we do, they fit quite comfortably in "Miscellany".
Books - I'm of the opinion that books can be discussed in "Arts & Entertainment."
Business & Economy - Economics is another subject that usually arises from current events. As for personal finances and investing, I haven't seen much talk about that here.
Computers & Internet - I think this fits nicely in "Science & Technology." If somebody interested in earth science doesn't want to read stuff on computers, he can just skip those threads. (Naturally, it would be nice of everybody used descriptive thread titles.)
Culture & Society and History & Archaeology - These subjects usually come up in the context of current events. I don't see anybody here wishing to discuss them to the exclusion of other subjects.
Humor fits comfortably in "Fun and Games."
Other comments...
Arts & Humanities might be a better name for "Arts & Entertainment." I'm ambivalent about that. The first sounds more highbrow, the second seems more utilitarian.
Miscellaneous - I don't like this name because it is an adjective rather than a noun, therefore inconsistent with the other names. But "Miscellany" (the noun) sounds okay in lieu of "Much Ado About Everything" or "Intellectual Outhouse."
News Zone - U.S. and News Zone - World - I can't decide whether "News Zone..." or "Current Events..." would be better. "Current Events" sounds more immediately comprehensible, but "News Zone" has a kind of zing that appeals to me. Lorianne suggests "International Affairs" and "American Affairs," but the word "Affairs" just doesn't feel quite right to me--it sounds almost exclusively political or diplomatic. (Am I making sense?)
On the Personal Side... - I lifted this straight from the Wendy McElroy site. It's not a noun, but I couldn't think of a more descriptive title. Perhaps someone else can.
I wish y'all would give some feedback on the topics, darn it! How is Vlad to know what we prefer if we don't say so? |
